Intro to Food Photography and Styling (online)
The world of food photography and styling is vast and you can easily spend your life savings on props, cameras, courses and other gear! In this workshop-style class we will introduce some of the key elements of taking lovely photos at home, using what you already have.
We’ll also walk you through our own set-up to give you an idea of how you could move on to more advanced photography and styling if you get the feel for it.
This workshop has been specially designed to support cookery teachers, to help them showcase their work in a way that feels fun and practical, but it would be suited to anybody who would like to learn more about taking beautiful food photos!
In this session we will cover the following:
● Some key elements of styling food for photography
● The basic principles of lighting
● Getting the most out of your camera
● Plates, crockery and props
● An introduction to processing your photos
There will be two practical sections to the class, to give you the opportunity to play around and get creative. In the
first we will work with tea and biscuits and in the second we will make a simple hummus and greens on toast.
We’ll also use a whatsapp group to share photos during the class for those who would like to.
What you’ll need
This class has very much been designed so that you can join in and use what you have already. With the exception
of the food, there’s no need to buy anything. When it comes to suggested props, just try to gather what you can.
There will be the opportunity to rummage around your kitchen or move around and take photos in different spots of
your home if you suddenly feel inspired.
● Some kind of background to work on. This could be anything from a nice tabletop to a proper
photography background or a nice plain tile you have lying around. We will work with what we have but
ideally you want something fairly plain and without a pattern.
● A camera - your phone camera is more than fine, just remember you won’t be able to use zoom on your
phone at the same time if that’s what you usually do.
● VSCO app on your phone
● A selection of basic props and ingredients
